Fencing
Have you ever heard the saying “Good fences make good neighbors?” Well, most people understand and agree with this statement. Properties with good fences have clear boundaries leaving no doubt about where property lines start and stop. Good fencing helps eliminate possible problems with neighboring properties, keep livestock inside their given areas and clearly define property lines. Good fencing is essential in Texas.

There are several different types of fence to choose from and the type of fence you need depends on your needs. Some of the most common types of fencing are High fence or deer-proof fencing, goat wire, barbed wire, and decorative fencing.
-
A high fence is a wire product that is 8’ tall and specifically designed to keep deer in or out. This is usually used on larger properties that are looking to keep their wildlife and specific genetics inside their property. This is an extremely effective type of fencing for big wildlife operations or smaller properties that are in the deer breeding business.
-
Goat wire is one of the most common types of fencing. It is more of a wire “net” that is designed to keep animals in or out of a specific area. This fence is shorter than a high fence, usually between 4’-5’. It is also a great way to keep goats and other livestock in or out of an area. Net wire can be installed with pipe or cedar posts depending on the landowner's preference.
-
Barbed wire is probably the most common type of fencing. It's cost-effective and it helps define property lines clearly. It is mainly used for cattle or simply as a boundary indicator. The spacing of the wire allows for wildlife to pass from property to property but still provides a solid property indicator.
-
Decorative fencing is used to accent some of the higher traffic areas on a property by providing a unique signature to each property. A top rail and bottom rail pipe fence or a decorative cedar rail fence is a great way to set your property apart.

Water gaps are often needed in the fence construction process. We often have dry ravines and creek areas that need specific fencing to be prepared for flash floods. Some property owners prefer a simple “breakaway” fence in these areas. Breakaway water gaps are exactly that. They are designed to break away from the rest of the fence during flooding. The idea is that only the high flow area of the fence breaks away leaving the rest of the fence intact. After severe flooding, the breakaway panels are easily replaced and the property is once again secured. It is cost-effective, simple, and fairly easy to maintain.

A more long-term solution to water gaps is swing gates. These are custom-fabricated panels placed on hinges that swing up in severe flooding. Swing gates are needed for most properties that have expensive exotics or whitetail breeding operations. The gates swing up during the flood and drop back down as the water recedes keeping the wildlife inside the property. These are very effective at keeping wildlife in and maintaining the genetics in your herd
